GIS technology is at the heart of smart cities
19th December, 2014
Since the Modi government has announced its plan to set up 100 Smart Cities, each stakeholder is out to give its best.
One such important participant in the development of Smart Cities is Geographic Information System or GIS. At a recently held annual conference by ESRI India in New Delhi, detailed discussions were held about how GIS can be an important tool in the planning and development of Smart Cities.

Explaining GIS, it is a centralised information system that provides an IT framework that integrates not only every stakeholder but also every aspect of the smart city processes – starting from conceptualisation, planning, development and maintenance.
So why is GIS required for the development of Smart Cities? The Smart city projects are complex as they are a conglomeration of residential and commercial spaces supported by infrastructure for roads, power, drainage and sewerage. They make a live city that depends heavily on technology. Therefore, a common technology system is required to enable coordination and integration of different participants of the smart city ecosystem. In this way, GIS provides an IT framework that not only integrates every stakeholder but also takes care of every aspect of the Smart City.
“Planning is the most important while setting up Smart Cities. Technology provides the framework for conceptualising and planning for Smart Cities. It will assist at every point from project conceptualising to site-analysis, design specifications, stakeholder participation and collaboration, design creation, simulation and evaluation,” said Agendra Kumar, president, ESRI India, a Gurgaon based company that provides technology solutions for cities.
